- Scenes from the life of Moscow are one of Nesterova’s favourite themes.
In them we sense a special, close connection with reality and at the same time the artist’s individual view of the world. Moreover, the style used indicates the artist’s interest in the traditional lubok art, icon painting and figurative art of the 1920s-1930s.
There is an obvious simplicity in the underlying idea for the painting as shown by the choice of the well known monument to Gogol (To the suffering Gogol) in the courtyard of house № 7 on Suvorovsky Boulevard, where the writer spent the last years of his life, by the relaxed poses of the painting’s personages and by the stage-managed scenes with their element of grotesque.
However, this conceals the artist’s striving to present categories of intellectual, cultural and metaphysical sense and her wish to discover new, higher levels of understanding the interrelationship of time and space.
In such allusions Nesterova constructs her own surrealist theatre.
Moreover, there is in her manner a directness and inclination to engage in play and the kind of emotional atmosphere which is inherent in the style of Primitivist artists.
The picture was a model of artistic interpretation of life and living history.
