Silhouettes first met with popularity in England in the early 1700's though the word takes its name from the French Politician Etienne de Silhouette who was a later hobby exponent of the art form. While early silhouettes were the province of the middle classes and wealthy, by the late Victorian and early Edwardian era they were for almost everyone. Silhouette artists operated 'parlours' on Piers, at fairs and trade shows, in Department Stores and at Exhibitions.
His normal place of work was Silhouette Parlour at the D H Evans Department Store on Londons Oxford Street.
On the reverse of those cards you will often find the printed text
".... This Silhouette Portrait is executed entirely freehand by Handrup, who begs to observe that his likenesses are executed by the Scissors alone and are preferable to any taken by machines inasmuch by the Scissor process the passions and peculiarities of Character are brought more into action. Silver Medal awarded Festival of Empire Crystal Palace 1911. Garden Parties, At-Homes, Bazaars, whist Drives etc. attended. For repeats please enclose a copy ...... "
