Hugo Chavez was elected as the legitimate president of Venezuela in 1999, a few years after his unsuccessful attempt to gain the office via coup.
An outspoken socialist, he’s used his decade in power to transform the Venezuelan economy along Cuban lines, consolidating state control of business and natural resources at the expense of private industry.
This led to a business-backed coup in 2002, but Chavez bounced back stronger than ever.
Though he’s ostensibly committed to democracy, in recent years Chavez has become more comfortable palling around with dictators, whose techniques of media control and dissent suppression he openly copies.
